General Mediawiki help

ESP Wiki uses the same Mediawiki software as Wikipedia, so most of the documentation is useful here to, such as:

And, from Mediawiki's documentation:

Conventions different from Wikipedia's

For editors, ESP Wiki generally tries to use the same structure, names, and conventions that are used for editing en.wikipedia.org. A few differences exist:

  • Where Wikipedia has "See also" sections, we have "Related pages on ESP Wiki" sections. We originally used the name "See also", but people were adding external links there, so we changed to a clearer name.
  • Where Wikipedia has a set of tags such as <ref> {{fact}} and [citation needed], we use "references" for all those things: <ref> {{ref}} [reference needed].

Style

ESP Wiki doesn't have a style guide. Here are just some observations about what's already happening. If there's a disagreement between this list and the current state of the pages on the wiki, this list should be updated. So, this list is purely descriptive, not prescriptive.

  • Category names are pluralised whenever possible ("Arguments", "Pages in French", but we obviously don't pluralise "Finland")
  • If in doubt about whether an article name should be singular or plural, go for singular. But sometimes a plural is obviously better: patent trolls - because the article is not about "the thing called 'Patent troll'", it's about the problem which is caused by the existence of many patent trolls.
