==General Mediawiki help==

This site uses [http://www.mediawiki.org/ MediaWiki].  The following are some pointers to their documentation.

For help on using this Wiki see [[MetaWikipedia:Help:Introduction | An introduction to MediaWiki]] or [[MetaWikipedia:Help:Reader | Help:Reader]].

For help on editing pages see [[MetaWikipedia:Help:Editor | Help:Editor]], especially the section with [[MetaWikipedia:Help:Wikitext examples | Wiki markup examples]].

If you're interested in sustaining this project, see the [[Project:Site support | Site support]] page.

==Conventions different from Wikipedia's==

For editors, {{SITENAME}} generally tries to use the same structure, names, and conventions that are used for editing [http://en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org].  A few differences exist:

* Where Wikipedia has "''See also''" sections, we have "''Related pages on {{SITENAME}}''" sections.  We originally used the name "See also", but people were adding external links there, so we changed to a clearer name.

* Where Wikipedia has a set of tags such as ''<nowiki><ref></nowiki>'' ''<nowiki>{{fact}}</nowiki>'' and ''<nowiki>[citation needed]</nowiki>'', we use "references" for all those things: ''<nowiki><ref></nowiki>'' ''<nowiki>{{ref}}</nowiki>'' ''<nowiki>[reference needed]</nowiki>''.  When writing [[Help:Adding references|the documentation]], this seemed more logical.

==Style==

{{SITENAME}} doesn't have a style guide.  Here are just some observations about what's already happening.  If there's a disagreement between this list and the current state of the pages on the wiki, this list should be updated.  So, this list is purely descriptive, not prescriptive.

* '''Category names''' are pluralised whenever possible ("Arguments", "Pages in French", but we obviously don't pluralise "Finland")

* If in doubt about whether an '''article name''' should be singular or plural, go for singular.  But sometimes a plural is obviously better: [[patent trolls]] - because the article is not about "the thing called 'Patent troll'", it's about the problem which is caused by the existence of many patent trolls.
