HTML5 and video patents
On June 30th 2009, the committee developing HTML5 announced that they could not agree on a video standard for HTML. The reason, was software patents. The two candidate formats were H.264 and Ogg Theora but the former is heavily encumbered by patents, and the latter has a questionable future because patent-free innovation in the field of video compression is thought to be extremely difficult.
