Florian Mueller lobbied against software patents in Europe in 2004 and 2005 during the campaigns surrounding the proposed EU software patents directive. Some of his actions and policies have, however, drawn heavy criticism from anti-software-patent campaigners.

A few years after the anti-software-patent campaigns, he worked for companies including Microsoft and Oracle.
