Do you have any links to info about the ppmtompeg issue?
MPEG-1 should be 95 or 99% patent-free by now, with the exception of stuff changed between the 1990 "near complete"[1] draft and the 1993 final version, plus any encoder/decoder optimisations developed after the spec was published.
A web search confirms that the package was removed for patent reasons, but I haven't found many details. I found this in Google's cache: [2] (but those comments aren't there any more on the live forum page [3]). Ciaran 23:16, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
