Talk:Example software patents

Scope of page

I think this page should discuss more "valid" software patents, instead of lots of ridiculous patents. I want to see discussion of, say, RSA patent, LZW patent, arithmetic coding patent, IDEA patent, etc.

Ridiculous patents such as "fat line", "IsNot" are evidences that software patents should be examined more carefully, not that software patents should be abolished. They are still relevant, and do show pathology of current system, but I think they belong to a separate page, say, ridiculous patents, not example software patents. --Sanxiyn

I think you're right. There's already silly patents, but I didn't get time yet to think of how to define the difference between this page and the silly patents page. I also think the per-company breakdown is bad. If someone wants to see IBM's patents, we should have something on the IBM page to help them find that info. Maybe the breakdown on this page should be by type: algorithm patents, file format patents, information display patents... Ciaran 03:13, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
I added some valid and important patented algorithms I am aware of. Sanxiyn (talk) 12:53, 19 June 2014 (EDT)
Great. Four years later and I never got around to reorganising the patents on this and the silly patents page. Do you think the name of this page should be changed, or do some patents just have to get moved to silly patents? Ciaran (talk) 13:18, 19 June 2014 (EDT)
I think, silly patents should be moved to, well, silly patents. Sanxiyn (talk) 13:26, 19 June 2014 (EDT)
